Entering the Holiest
Hebrews 10:1-25
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near… [Heb 10:19-22]
These verses bring us to the heights of Hebrews: Entering the Holiest and drawing near. The whole of the letter points in this direction, through the veil, His flesh, and into the Holy of Holies. This is not the earthly tabernacle; it is the Holiest of All in the heavenly tabernacle. “For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are a copy of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.” [Heb 9:24].
It is, as we have read, the entering into the Holiest that allows us to mature in this life of faith. “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” [Heb 5:12] This is how many remain after conversion, spiritual babes. There is little maturing, because of failure to “enter in.” As Israel failed to enter the Promise Land, so too the writer’s audience had failed to enter the Holy of Holies. It is a disorder that many believers have today. They may be born again but have never grown up because they don’t enter in.
Jesus, the better Priest and Sacrifice, has opened the way into the Holiest. Our part is to by faith enter. His better blood is that of a better Covenant; “For the life of the flesh is in the blood” [Lev 17:11]. Eternal life is only through the better blood of Jesus. All who by faith receive Jesus as Lord and His work on the Cross of Calvary, have eternal life. That is the wonderful inheritance of the born again believer. But it doesn’t stop there. After salvation comes sanctification, the growing in Christ to further the Kingdom.
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by this new and living way, through the veil, that is “His body” [NIV], let us draw near to Him with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled with a pure conscience and our bodies washed with pure water [ref. Heb 10:19-22].
Might we make sure to enter in daily. For it is in the Holiest that we grow. And it is only in the Holy of Holies that we tap into that power from on High that enables us to live this life of faith the way God wants us to.
